Change the Key, Not Always the Lock

Losing track of a key doesn't always mean buying a new lock, so our lock rekeying service at David Carr Locksmiths & Security helps Bondi Junction customers review their options. If a key has gone missing, a tenant has moved out or you have bought a property with an unknown key history, replacing every lock may not be necessary. Where the cylinder is suitable, we can change its internal configuration so the previous key no longer works.

We first check the lock type and condition. Rekeying a badly damaged or unsuitable cylinder will not fix an underlying mechanical problem, so we will explain when lock repair or replacement makes more sense. For multi-door buildings, a planned key system may also be worth considering.

Call (02) 9389 8543 to discuss which doors need their keys changed.

When Rekeying Is Worth Considering

Rekeying is a practical response to changing access arrangements, but it depends on the hardware already installed. We assess the lock before confirming an approach.

  • After moving.

Previous residents may still hold working keys. Changing the cylinder configuration helps reset everyday key control.

  • Lost or unreturned keys.

When a missing copy cannot be located, the existing access arrangement may no longer be appropriate. Rekeying can address that risk.

  • Staff or tenancy changes.

An office or rental property may need updated key permissions. We can discuss how many locks are affected.

  • Convenience across doors.

Compatible locks may support a more practical keying arrangement. The available options depend on their make and configuration.

FAQs

Rekeying changes the internal key combination of a compatible cylinder. Replacing a lock installs different hardware and may be necessary if existing parts are damaged.

A correctly completed rekey generally prevents the previous key from operating the changed cylinder. Other locks not included in the work remain unaffected.

Not every lock design supports rekeying, and damaged mechanisms may need replacement. We check the existing hardware before recommending a solution.
